At the March 18 Troop 1 weekly scout meeting at First Presbyterian Church of Logan, Utah State University student Lacey Wilder gave a fascinating presentation entitled “Bear Safety” to Troop 1 scouts, leaders and parents who were present. Lacey Wilder is a junior at USU, and a student in Dr. Robert H. Schmidt’s Environmental Science ENVS 3600, “Living with Wildlife” class. Coincidentally, Robert & Caroline Schmidt’s son, Wesley, is a Troop 1 Eagle Scout!
Ms. Wilder captivated her audience of Cache Valley scouters with a multimedia presentation on three of the world’s eight known species of bears; the North American Black Bear, Brown Bear, and Polar Bear. Included in her demonstration to the scouts was the skull of a Brown Bear, as well as plaster and rubber foot print samples of a Grizzly and Black Bear. Smaller mammal skulls were also shown to our scouts. Ms. Wilder also gave Troop 1 scouts tips on how to act when you are confronted by a bear, as well as pointers on how to safely camp in the outdoors when you know you are in bear country.
Troop 1 thanks Lacey Wilder for her interesting and informative presentation to our scouts!
