Last evening at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Logan, Utah, Boy Scout Troop 1 held their quarterly Court of Honor, observing 104 years of continuous service to boys in Cache Valley. Scouting has instilled in young men the values and knowledge that they will need to become leaders in their communities and country.
Pride in the Past – A history of Troop #1
From 1906 through 1910, a boys club known as Knights of King Arthur met at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Logan. In February 1910, Scouting came to America and one month later in March of 1910, Troop #1 was chartered with 26 boys in the original troop. Reverend Paul Jones became the first Scoutmaster after hearing a talk by Lord Robert Baden-Powel, the founder of Scouting.
Troop #1 is known as the oldest Scout Troop west of the Mississippi River. Over the years, Troop #1 has had 6 sponsoring organizations. They are:
1910-1924: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Logan, Utah
1924-1927: Utah Agricultural College (in 1957 became U.S.U.)
1927-1947: First Presbyterian Church, Logan, Utah
1947-1949: Logan City Fire Department
1949-1978: B.P.O.E. (Logan Elks Lodge)
1978-Present: Logan Lions Club
Troop 1 meets every Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Logan, located at 200 West and Center Street. Troop 1 is a non-denominational scouting unit.
At 6:30 pm, Troop 1’s Advancement Chairman Marietta Veeder gave a tour to Troop 1 scouts of the Reverend Paul Jones Library at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, which was the original meeting place for scouts in the troop back when Troop 1 began back in 1910. Our scouts learned of our rich historical significance to scouting in Utah, as well as reviewing old black and white photos from our past.
From 7:00-7:45 pm, Troop 1’s Court of Honor rewarded scouts who earned rank advancement from Scout to Star ranks, as well as handing out a variety of over 30 merit badges to scouts who have worked hard the past several months to earn them.
7:45-8:15 pm was spent devouring a 104 year anniversary cake for all; celebrating the start of scouting in Utah; back when Troop 1 began in March of 1910…one month after the Boy Scouts of America started up.
