During the weekend of October 18-19, 2013, six Troop 1 scouts participated in the world-wide annual Jamboree-on -the -Air, while also earning requirements on Radio Merit Badge. The Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in your own community.
After breakfast and raising a new USA flag on the Hyrum State Park, Hyrum, Utah flagpole, Troop 1 scouts under the direction of local scouter and ham radio operator Michael Gordon, began communicating, via ham radio, with scouts from several western and mid-western states in the USA. After a full morning of learning about what other scouting units were doing on that particular Saturday morning, Troop 1 leaders and scouts helped pack-up Michael Gordon's radio gear, had lunch, and departed Hyrum State Park after accomplishing a thorough trash sweep.
On October 18, 2014, Troop 1 will participate in Jamboree-on-the-Internet, which is similar to JOTA, but is different in that scouts around the world chat online with other scouts on a special JOTA chat room, via pc's, and find out about each others' cultures and traditions.
